Get ready for the 2017 growing season with a weekend break to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival. With an impressive collection of over 500 trade stands, food outlets and demonstrations, and myriad show gardens displaying all the current horticultural themes and fashions, this is a show to inspire hardy perennials and young buds alike. Malvern is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, source of the famous spring water but also inspiration for the music of Edward Elgar, the poetry of WH Auden, and the fantastical imaginations of CS Lewis and his hill–walking companion JRR Tolkien. And if all that doesn't plant a few artistic seeds, we also include a visit to Stratford–upon–Avon, home of the Bard and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Saturday After a morning departure from your local area we'll travel by coach to Stratford–upon–Avon, the Warwickshire wattle and daub birthplace of William Shakespeare, where you'll have some free time. The famous Ann Hathaway Cottage is just a mile out of town, or you could head for the Old Town's Sheep Street and the award–winning Tudor World, built on the site of Shrieves House and once the original abode of William Rogers, reputedly the inspiration behind the character of John Falstaff. For a relaxing way to pass the time, naturalists might like to visit the butterfly farm, a quick flutter across the nearby bridge, where various species of stunning tropical butterflies can be seen in all stages of their life cycle. Later in the afternoon we'll continue our journey and arrive at the hotel in good time for dinner, after which you're free to enjoy a relaxed evening and overnight stay.
Sunday After a full English breakfast we will set off for the weekend's main event at Malvern's Three Counties Showground. Known for being one of the friendliest shows run by the Royal Horticultural Society, the Malvern Spring Festival features a wealth of inspirational ideas, practical tips and a great day out for gardeners and foodies alike. We will commence the journey homeward in the mid to late afternoon.
