4 days - by Coach

Price from £299.95 per person*
Departures from 9th Jul 2017 to 8th Oct 2017

Single person supplement : £90.00 per person

In 2009 readers of Wanderlust magazine, when asked to pick which of 400 great railway journeys around the world was their Number One, chose the Scottish West Highland Line. To understand why, you really have to see it for yourself; anyone who thinks the Lake District is pretty will be stunned into contemplative silence by the landscape surrounding the Highland railways. On this break we travel on two of the best; a return steam–hauled trip on the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig, and a one–way journey on the Kyle of Lochalsh line to Inverness. The break includes rail tickets and coach travel, and hotel with 3–course dinner and full Scottish breakfast every day.

What do people say on Tripadvisor?

'Simply one of the best short journey railway lines in the world even without the Harry Potter connection. Incredible scenery and pretty little stations. If you love trains then you simply must try it.'

'One of the most scenic railway journeys in Britain, especially on the ... train from Fort William to Mallaig.'

'Utterly stunning scenery... coastal splendour, and rugged mountain landscapes. We saw buzzards and red deer.'

Day 1: After a morning pick up in your local area we travel by comfortable coach to the 3 star Carrbridge Hotel, near Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park. There will be time to freshen up before your 3–course evening meal and your first night's stay.

Day 2: First a full Scottish breakfast, then we embark on the first of our two epic rail journeys, a one–way trip on the Kyle Line from Kyle of Lochalsh on the West coast back to Inverness, travelling along the shores of Loch Carron, through Strath Carron and Glen Carron, then passing Dingwall and the edge of the Beauly Firth before arriving in Inverness. This beautiful Line has been likened to a symphony in three parts: pastoral, mountain and marine. At the Kyle end you can see across to the Isle of Raasay and in fact it's now possible to walk across the long road bridge to the Isle of Skye. Once we arrive in Inverness, there will be some free time to explore before we return to the hotel by coach in good time to freshen up in time for dinner.

Day 3: A fortifying breakfast will set you up for the day, then we head by coach for Fort William where we join the 10:15 steam departure on the 'The Jacobite' to Mallaig. This section of the West Highland Line passes through Corpach, Locheilside, Lochailort and Morar and others on the way, and famously crosses the 100ft–high viaduct at Glenfinnan used in the Harry Potter film sequences featuring the Hogwarts Express. You don't need to be a Harry Potter fan to appreciate this journey, though, as the scenery in reality beats any cinematography hands down. Arrival at Mallaig is at 12:25 and you will have free time to have lunch and look around this small port town until the return journey which departs at 14:10. We'll be back at Fort William at 16:00, and the coach will then take you back to the hotel in good time for the evening's dinner and socialising.

Day 4: We enjoy one last scrumptious Scottish breakfast and then we say goodbye to the highlands and commence our journey home.

† Please be aware that the steam engines used on The Jacobite are maintained to the highest standards, however West Coast Railways reserves the right to change engines or to run diesel–powered locomotives in the event of breakdown, or if urgent repairs are needed, without notice or refund.
